Vivian Halleen Newman
Vivian Halleen Newman 90, of Duncan, Oklahoma, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2020 at Elk Crossing Center.
Graveside funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2020 at Fairlawn Cemetery in Comanche, Oklahoma with Earl Gardner officiating, and arrangements have been entrusted to the family care of Carter-Smart Funeral Directors.
Vivian was born December 13, 1929 to Oscar & Florence Gardner. She graduated from Empire High School in 1948. A longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Meridian, she taught the women's Sunday School class and sang in the choir. Halleen loved to sing hymns and was a prayer warrior. She retired from the Oklahoma State Department of Transportation where she worked as an accountant.
Family was important to Halleen. She loved having everyone to the house where she served okra, cornbread, fried potatoes, black-eyed peas, onions, tomatoes, fudge, and homemade ice cream! She also enjoyed traveling to visit family and went to California, Arizona, Nevada, Michigan, Texas, Nebraska, Iowa, Scotland, South Korea, and Indonesia. Besides cooking and traveling, Halleen liked to work on crossword puzzles, garden, crochet, and read.
Halleen is survived by a son; Jim Newman & his wife Mary, daughters; Cathy Parrish & her husband Paton, Carolyn Gammon & her husband Greg, daughter-in-law; Nona Newman, brothers; Jim & Gus Gardner, sister-in-law; Jean Jennings, 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Halleen was preceded in death by her parents, husband Roy Newman, brothers; Orland and Bill Gardner, sisters; Dean Magness and Ruby Anderson, and a son; Steve Newman.
