Sue Alexander Cogdell
Sue Alexander Cogdill, 91, of Richmond, VA. area passed away peacefully with her family by her side on October 30, 2020.
Sue was born March 27, 1929 in Waurika, Oklahoma to Herschel R. and Ruth B. Alexander. The family moved to Duncan, Oklahoma where Sue attended the Duncan City schools. Sue met the love of her life , Joe B. Cogdell, in her childhood through the friendship of parents. Following high school she attended William Woods College, then transferred to the University of Oklahoma where she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority and graduated with a business degree, being one of the few women in her class to do so. Following Joe's return from service in the Navy, Sue and Joe dated while at OU, and after graduation from OU were married on June 2, 1952. They raised their family in Duncan and Fayetteville, Arkansas. Once their children were grown and educated, Sue and Joe returned to Duncan following a detour in Ft. Worth, Texas, and retired to southern Florida followed by Las Vegas, NV. where they had many happy fun-filled years. Following Joe's death in 2004 Sue moved to CrossRidge community in Richmond, VA. area to be close to her daughter. Sue embodied the pioneering spirt of her native Oklahoma as she was outgoing, independent, resourceful, tireless, quick witted and of good cheer. Serving and caring for her family was Sue's lifelong passion at which she excelled, and she was a never happier than when cooking for and entertaining her family and friends or while traveling with Joe around the globe. Sue was an accomplished duplicate bridge player, avid exercise enthusiast, voracious reader and life-long Sooner football fan.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Herschel R. and Ruth B. Alexander, and her husband Joe B. Gogdell.
Sue in survived by her children; Joe B. Cogdell, Jr. and wife Margaret B. Gogdell, Alexia Ann Miles and her husband Michael F. Miles, MD, grandchildren; Joe B. Codgell lll, Brian D. Codgell, Andrew A. Cogdell, Madeleine R. Miles, Nathaniel F. Miles, Erin E. Miles and brother; James Alexander.
The family would like to thank the caregivers and staff of Hanover Manor, VCU Health and Henrico Doctors Hospital for the excellent care provided to Sue. a private burial will be held in Duncan.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Oklahoma Medical Research foundation.
