Jerry was born To Gardie and Minnie "Dehart" Sellers on November 18, 1941 in Walters, Oklahoma. Jerry grew up in the Walters area, and graduated from Walters High School in 1960. After graduating from high school, he went into the U. S. Navy. Later, he went to work for Henry Jones Floor Sanding, and later at a floor sanding business in Tulsa. After that he went to work at Ft. Sill (Civil Service) in Lawton, Oklahoma for many years until retiring. After retirement, he had a small trucking business delivering rock, managed a furniture store, and also did some farming.

Jerry was married on November 30, 1961 at Lawton, Oklahoma, and he and Kay Rene had three children, Sherry, Dalena, and Jerry Dale. They made their home in Lawton , and Tulsa before returning to Walters. Jerry attended The Church of God in his early years, and other churches in the area later in life.

Jerry enjoyed fishing, and drag racing. He loved drag racing, and won many times in an early 60's Dodge Dart station wagon with a slant 6 motor. He also raced a 1967 Camaro, called Grandpa's Toy which his son, Jerry Dale later raced when he was old enough. He then got a 1962 Chevrolet Impala that his son-in-law, Steve raced, and won many races including NHRA Division 4 champion. He later got a 1969 Chevrolet impala that Steve also raced. He bought Steve his first circle track dirt car. He also loved going to the Lawton Speedway to watch his grandson Cody race sprint cars. He brought the love of racing to his family which then started the tradition of racing which included his son, son-in-law, grandson, and great-granddaughters. The tradition will continue because all of them love racing too.
