Athaline Edgar passed away Monday, May 23, 2022 at the age of 103.
She was born May 31, 1918 to Elvis and Eudie Morgan Smith in Red River Parish, near Coushatta, Louisiana. She graduated from Coushatta High School in 1934 and attended what was then Louisiana State Normal College in Natchitoches, Louisiana preparing to become a kindergarten - primary school teacher. While teaching first grade at DeRidder, Louisiana she met Jim Edgar. They were married June 17, 1938 and celebrated 64 years of marriage before Jim passed away August 11, 2002. After Halliburton employed Jim, they moved to Duncan. She was a member of the First Baptist Church since 1942. She taught four and five year olds in Sunday school for 35 years and taught kindergarten at First Baptist Church for 17 years. In addition to church, she enjoyed sewing, gardening and family.
Her parents, her husband Jim, her daugher, Sharon Barron who died March 18, 2018, also a son James Patrick and daughter-in-law Mary V. Edgar, two grandsons, James Albert Barron and James Paul Edgar, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her grandchildren, Kevin Barron of Guthrie, Oklahoma and Louetta Barron Melendez of Califorina, Jeanne Edgar Barry and Sarah Edgar Seymour and her husband Hugh of Spotslyvanie, Virginia and great grandchildren, Ryan Melendez of Califorina and Johnny Barry and Allison Barry of Virginia and step greatgrandson Jarret Seymour of Virginia, great-great grandson, Jackson Barry of North Carolina and a great great granddaughter, Amelia Barry of North Carolina.
Graveside funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at the Duncan Cemetery with Dr. Brad Allen officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to the family care of Carter-Smart Funeral Directors.
Pallbearers will be Dan Mitchell, J.P. Edgar, Ryan Melendez, Stevie Myers, James Nash and Robert Knoll. Honoray Pallbearer will be Kevin Barron.
Family visitation will be Saturday evening at the Carter-Smart Funeral Home May 28, 2022 from 6:00-7:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church or charity of choice.
