Obituary

Velva Rae “Ma” Newton peacefully passed on May 2, 2026, in her home surrounded by love.

Velva was born on August 21, 1949 to Leslie Clyde Davis and Melba Gail Davis in Walters, Oklahoma. From that first moment, she brought sunshine and joy into the world. She was no stranger to hard work, helping out on the farm as she grew. At the tender age of 9, she took Jesus into her heart and was saved at Falls Creek on a trip with the Corum Baptist Church. Her faith and love for Jesus never wavered.

She attended Walters schools until she married at the age of 15 to George Newton. Going on to get her GED, she then attended and graduated from Cameron University with a bachelor’s degree, a testament to her hard work. She also worked for the Department of Human Services for 23 years as a caseworker, eventually becoming a supervisor, a testament to her strong character and loving spirit. For some time, she was a stay-at-home mom, a testament of her devotion to her family.

Two sons were born to George and Velva, James and Brent. She was an amazing mother, an amazing cook, and, later on, an amazing grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved her family with all of her heart and made sure that Jesus was ever present in their lives.

Velva was a member of Bethel Assembly of God Church for 30 years. She spent many hours working with their women’s ministry, submitting recipes for the church cookbook, and helping with potluck dinners.

She was a true Southern lady in the best way. Like many, she had a stubborn streak a country mile wide, but it often served her well in her work. She called everyone “Sugar” and could often be funny without even realizing it. Her light will never truly be extinguished.

Velva was preceded in death by her husband, George; brother, Leslie Clyde Davis Jr; sister, Treva Kuzma; and son, James Newton. She is survived by her son, Brent Newton and wife Disa; grandchildren, Breanna Endicott and spouse, J.J.; Sabrina Meienburg, and spouse Kris; great-grandchildren, Creed, Averee, Wyatt James, Joanna, Layla, Adeline, Jackson, and Jonathan; niece, Bethanie; grand-niece, Ava; as well as many extended family members and friends, whom she loved dearly.

Pallbearers will be JJ Endicott, Kris Meienburg, Jonathan Endicott, Creed Powell, Jon Byers, and Brian Lokey. Honorary pallbearers are Jeremy Newton, Caleb Newton, and Jackson Endicott.

Services for Velva will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the Bethel Assembly of God Church, with interment to follow immediately at Duncan Municipal Cemetery. Velva’s favorite color was yellow, just like the sunshine she brought into so many lives, so the family asks that you please wear yellow to honor her memory.
