Joseph Edgar "Joe" Nichols 84, of Velma, Oklahoma, passed away Saturday, March 6, 2021 at Wilkins Health & Rehabilitation Community.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at the Carter-Smart Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Randy Southerland officiating, interment will follow at the Duncan Cemetery. And arrangements have been entrusted to the family care of Carter-Smart Funeral Directors.
Joe was born on Monday, April 13, 1936 in Duncan to Ves and Marie (Montgomery) Nichols. He was graduated from Comanche High School in 1954. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Baumholder, Germany, While on leave in England he met the girl who would be his future bride. He married Jean Elizabeth Coe of Thaxted England on January 25, 1958 in Comanche, Oklahoma. They made their home in California and Texas before returning to his Oklahoma roots and settling in Velma in 1972. He & Jean owned and operated the Nichols Drive Inn from 1972-1975
He was a dedicated Dad, enjoying basketball and dirt bikes with his boys in their early years. His hobbies included guns, golf, and travel and he was a avid reader, particularly books on military history and was an orb of knowledge on any topic related to history.
He is survived by his wife; Jean of the home, Son; David & his wife Susan, son: Robert & daughter-in-law Deborah all of Duncan. Grandchildren; Trace Nichols, Megan Perry, Jessica & Chris Nichols, Tiffany Gray, Aaron, Zack & Kara Nichols all of Duncan, and 6 great-grandchildren, also a sister; Alisha Caldwell of Walters, Oklahoma.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and his son; Paul.
Pallbearers will be his 2 sons and 4 grandsons.
The family would like to thank the nurses of DRH Tower 3 and the staff of Wilkins Nursing Center and Chisholm Trail Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.
