Billy Joe Thompson was born on October 21, 1975 in Duncan, Oklahoma to Patty Ward Messersmith and Joe Thompson. Billy Joe graduated from Comanche high school in 1993. He started his working career at Goodner's grocery store and moved onto welding which he enjoyed and excelled in with various companies throughout the area. Finishing his working career at Family Dollar distribution until he became ill. Billy Joe was a lover of all sports, especially his beloved OSU football Cowboys, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Oklahoma City thunder basketball team. He always watched them faithfully. He loved fishing and he was a collector of old fishing reels that he had restored with his friend and buddy, Earl Weisner. Billy Joe accepted Christ as his Lord Savior and joined the New Beginnings Methodist Church in 2025 where he attended faithfully. At New Beginnings Methodist Church, he gained an extended family who accepted him and loved him as much as he loved them. Billy Joe will be deeply loved and forever missed.
He was preceded in death by Mary and Kyle Ward, his maternal grandparents; Dean Thompson, his paternal grandfather; Billy and Debbie Ward, his aunt and uncle; as well as cousin, Joy Dawn Ward. He is survived by mother, Patty Messersmith, whom he loved dearly, and stepfather, Guy Messersmith, of Duncan, Oklahoma; his father, Joe Thompson, and stepmother Lida Thompson, of Marlow, Oklahoma; Son Jimmy Thompson of Rush Springs, Oklahoma and granddaughter, Blakelynn Thompson, also of Rush Springs, Oklahoma; Sister Makinzie Ash, of Ada, Oklahoma; Juanita Thompson, his paternal grandmother, of Marlow Oklahoma. Also, Carlos "Jim" Muchmore, who is a beloved friend, mentor, and was like family to him, as well as several aunts, and uncles and many extended family members and friends. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Carter Smart Funeral Directors. The family will be having a private viewing and a come and go viewing has been scheduled for Friday, February 6, 2026, throughout the day at Carter Smart Funeral Home for Billy's beloved friends and loved ones. Memorial service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Duncan New Beginnings Methodist Church with Pastor Lisa Beavers officiating. His inurnment will be scheduled at a later date.
