Gerald Wayne Smiddy 68, of Duncan, Oklahoma passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at his home with his family at his side.
A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 19, 2017 at the Carter-Smart Funeral Home Chapel.
Gerald was born December 10, 1948 in Monroe, Louisiana to Fred & Agatha (Roberts) Smiddy. Gerald was blessed to be born on his beloved mother's birthday. He often teased his siblings that this made him special. Gerald enlisted in U.S. Navy in 1966 and served as a Corpsman in the Vietnam War. After his services in the Navy, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a medic in Germany. He graduated from Cameron University with degrees in mathematics and elementary education. After graduation he taught elementary schools in Grandfield, Oklahoma and then began a 20 year career with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services in McAlister where he retired.
Gerald was an accomplished wood carver and loved writing poetry, spending time with his family and friends, and helping fellow veterans. He was a kind giving soul with a wonderful sense of humor.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-laws; Jeremy and Jennifer Smiddy of Duncan, Oklahoma, Andrew and Courtney Smiddy of Duncan, Oklahoma, sisters and brother-in-laws; Rebecca and Charles Scott of Columbia, Missouri, Cathy and Deiter Gauthun of Duncan, Oklahoma, brother; David Smiddy of Tullahassee, Oklahoma, eleven grandchildren; five nephews, and two nieces.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Sandra Dunn.
